History: http://free-anime.wikia.com/wiki/Makoto_Tachibana The wiki page has a really good bit of detail.
Personality: Makoto Tachibana is mostly known as the “gentle giant”, the “mother” of the group, the care taker, or the big brother of main characters . With kind eyes and a fond smile, he serves to maintain a semblance of balance to the otherwise very odd combination of boys in the swim club.

One of the first things people notice about Makoto is how friendly he is. He greets others (friends, family, and strangers alike) with an inviting smile. His warm disposition diffuses any sort of intimidating factor that comes with his tall height and his strong build. He's relatively calm with a refreshing bit of energy that gives a bit of originality to his personality.

Despite his friendliness, he can get a little riled up if his friends are doing something too crazy. He'll gasp or raise his voice or chide them if they're misbehaving in public or doing something improper. But if it can't be helped, it can't be helped and he's left standing in the background with his hand over his face wondering “Why is this happening?”

Even though his friends are prone to doing odd things, Makoto still goes along with them. A prime example of this is when Nagisa suggested that they break into the closed down Iwatobi Swim Club building and dig up their own trophy. Even in High Speed, Makoto was the first one to be recruited into the medley relay team.

From that, he seems to be more of a follower than a leader, despite being the Captain of the swim club. However, his leadership abilities come out when he corrals his team together and makes sure that everyone is all right. Examples of this is when he helped teach Rei how to swim, he also made sure that everyone could make it to the beach trip by improvising with camping equipment and did the best he could to get them there. and he kept calm and collected when everyone was panicking about Haruka's disappearance after his race with Rin, reassuring them that he would be alright.

But while he tries his best to put on his game face for certain situations, we can tell in other situations that his nerves aren't made of steel. That being said, it is important to note that Makoto is hydrophobic, so whenever he swims, he feels as if there's a strange, unknown force, a demon, lurking right underneath him, waiting patiently to pull him down into the water's depths to take him away. While he can swallow down his paranoia for the most part, it doesn't stop him from feeling like he just wants to curl up out of fear.

Serious fears aside, he's also pretty skittish and can be quite the “'fraidy-cat” when it comes to a lot of things. Dark and spooky places? Not a chance. Possibility of there being ghosts? Goodbye. Even if someone were to sneak behind him and surprise him even by accident, they run the risk of giving him a heart-attack. When he's scared, it doesn't matter how much shorter the other person is, he'll hide behind them or cling to their shirt. We see this mainly happen with Haruka, considering that he would hold onto a small piece of his shirt or stand behind him out of fear ever since they were children.

Despite that, though, he can steel himself and swim competitions with all of his might without freezing up or freaking out. He still manages to gather plenty of courage to get him through what he really needs to do, and he does the best he can. To him, that's what truly matters.

Of course, when his game face isn't on, he knows how to have fun and relax. For an example, one of his hobbies is playing with his siblings, Ren and Ran. He spends a lot of time babysitting them and taking care of them when his parents are away or busy and had been since he was young. They are very attached to each other and he cares for them deeply. The Tachibana siblings have a loving relationship with each other and Makoto would do anything for them to see that they’re happy, cared for, and safe.

He also doesn't mind inviting people over to play video games with him, or going out to the movies or to festivals to have a good time. He enjoys the company of others and though he's doesn't bounce around or act goofy, he still knows how to make a joke or two or talk animatedly about certain topics. He smiles and laughs like a normal teenage boy, and when his friends are at their best and having fun, so is he.

If they're not at their best, however, he can get a bit fussy over them, but not overbearingly so. He'll warn his friends not to do something if he thinks it might be a bad idea, but if they go ahead and do it anyway, he'll step up to the plate and make sure that they're all right again. This mindset mostly comes from being an older sibling; while you can't make people's decisions for them, you can at least pick them up when they fall.

Similarly, Makoto has had those instances as well. When he decided to try to save Rei when he was drowning and ended up almost drowning himself, Haruka was there to save him and Nagisa was there to lift his spirits right back up. He knows that he can count on his friends to be there for him when he's at his lowest because he's there when they're at theirs.

That being said, Makoto's relationships with his friends are very important to him. The most important bonds to him are ones that are strong and deep in meaning. To him, the meaning of the word “team” runs a lot deeper since each individual person brings something completely different to the group and makes their comradery that much more unique.

Haruka has been Makoto's friend since they were young children. They've gone through elementary, middle, and now high school together and their relationship hasn't changed in the least. They're as thick as thieves, two peas in a pod, best friends forever and ever. Though they're like day and night, they seem to stick together like glue. There is nothing about Haruka that Makoto doesn't like. To Makoto, “Haru is just Haru” and that's how it will always be. He even seems to know exactly what Haruka is thinking at given moments and will often voice what Haruka can't be bothered to say aloud. Their bond to each other runs deep and if it weren't for Haruka, Makoto would probably have completely quit swimming when he was a child.

Rin is another one of Makoto's childhood friends. They first met on opposing teams when Makoto swam breaststroke, but then Rin joined their elementary school class, followed swiftly by joining their swim club. They became fast friends with two similar interests in mind: swimming and Haruka. They got along easily and could speak with each other without worrying about stepping on the other's toes. Even when Rin came back from Australia a changed boy, he didn't stop caring about him and tried to reconnect. Though they had only known each other for a few months when they were children, they were teammates, comrades, friends; he never stopped thinking otherwise.

Nagisa met Makoto at the swim club since he was a year younger and there weren't many opportunities for them to meet at school. He's always admired Nagisa's spirit. Even if it seemed like it wasn't possible for his blond friend to do something, Nagisa always found a way to pull through and do it. It was how he was able to join up in the medley team in the first place. Makoto likes how Nagisa can just do what he's feeling in his heart and never give up and even though they hadn't seen each other since middle school, they reconnected as if no time had passed between them. Nagisa brings Makoto the energy he needs to fully succeed.

Rei, though they have only known each other for a short while, also became a very important part of Makoto's life even though they had only known each other for a short while. Having joined the team, he's now apart of his circle and wants to swim with him just as much as he wants to swim with the rest of his friends. He can feels proud that Rei always tries his hardest and that he doesn't give up even when the odds are against him. He knows that Rei can pull through with whatever he puts his mind to because he's just so smart and will find a way to overcome his obstacles no matter what.

Last but not least, there's Gou, their dependable, no-nonsense swim team manager. Being Rin's younger sister and having already met her in the past, it didn't take long for him to begin caring for her as well. He knows that managing all of them is probably very tiring and he can respect her for taking on such a formidable role and doing so well at it. He finds her very responsible and feels that he can rely on her to pick up any of the slack that he might leave behind in his wake as the captain of the team.

With that said, we can see how Makoto is a very dependable person. He sticks to what he says he's going to do and doesn't falter. When he was younger and he joined the medley relay team with Rin, he tried to get Haru to join and never backed out even though they only had two out of four people so close to tournament time. He stuck with Rin until they had all the people they needed and he hasn't changed since then. There were times when he could have actually given up on even getting the swim club started, but with Nagisa's diligence and perseverance, they were able to recruit their fourth team member.

This leads into the fact that Makoto can be a little self-sacrificing. When they mentioned going to the beach for training, he didn't let any of the others know what happened when he, Rin, and Haruka were younger. Instead he put on a brave face and said that he was fine. He probably genuinely was, but he knew, unfortunately, he couldn't escape Haruka's knowing looks. Makoto knew that there was a possibility of something going wrong and his hydrophobia acting up badly, especially since the ocean is a dangerous place (something even Haruka acknowledges in his character interview). Despite his worries, though, he made sure that everyone went and had a good time. In spite of his fears, he was able to experience their summer training camp outdoors.

Makoto happily spreads his kindness to others with a caring hands, gentle words, and sweet smiles. His soft and comforting demeanor smooths out even the rougher edges of the swim club and he is always willing to help out his friends in need. And though his smile seems bright, it covers up a deep fear and unsettled feelings, but with the help of each of his unique friends, he’s able to shine through just a bit brighter so that his lurking fears are nearly forgotten.
